Crystal Witch- Properties of Clear Quartz
Rebecca HaynesShare
Clear Quartz (also known Rock Crystal) is composed of Silicon Dioxide (Si02) and is the foundation of many other crystals including Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Smokey Quartz and Citrine. It is a fairly hard stone, with a hardness of around 7 on the Mohs scale (A scale for measuring the hardness of minerals. For reference, the softest is Talc at 1 and the hardest is Diamond at 10.

Found worldwide, Clear Quartz makes up about 12% of the earth's crust and is one of the most common, useful, and well-known crystals. In fact, in ancient times it was believed that quartz was actually fossilised ice- the fact that it is also cool to touch, probably helped to reinforce this belief :)
Clear Quartz can range in colour from transparent to milky white (due to water being trapped within the quartz during formation). It can also appear to have rainbows within it due to natural internal fractures or inclusions, as well as trapped air or liquid within the quartz.
Esoteric properties of Clear Quartz
Clear Quartz is probably the most commonly used crystal worldwide for healing and energy work, due in part to its prevalence and its beneficial properties.
A natural energiser, Clear Quartz can help to amplify the bodies energy. This ability also makes this crystal fantastic at amplifying emotional energy which is why it is not said to be beneficial to work with while undergoing deep trauma. It is, however, a beneficial stone to use if one is doing any form of shadow work, allowing deep seated emotions to be brought to light.
It is said to be able to clear and activate all chakras (energy centres of the body), however it does have a direct affinity with the third eye and crown chakras.
Clear Quartz also helps to provide clarity in one’s thoughts, making it a useful stone to hold when you are meditating or studying.
It helps to strengthen the power of other stones and can also be used to cleanse and purify them. In fact, people quite often place jewellery on top of a quartz cluster for the purpose of cleansing and removing negativity.
Clear quartz is a stone of divination and intuition. It is said to be able to enhance all psychic abilities, and has long been used in predicting the future, as well as accessing

information regarding the past. Clear crystal balls act as a conduit to see through the everyday to the future. On the other hand, it has been suggested that quartz crystals known as “Record keeper” crystals can allow individuals with great sensitivity to access stored knowledge from the universe itself.
A stone of wisdom and dreaming. It is said that by placing a Clear Quartz crystal beneath the pillow, or facing the crown chakra, one can gain wisdom and understand the lessons delivered during the dream state.
Carrying or wearing Clear Quartz is said to help an individual maintain balance, energy and protection.
How do you Cleanse and Charge Clear Quartz
Prior to using your Quartz, or any crystal for that matter, it is suggested that you cleanse and charge it. Quartz can be cleansed using many of the general cleansing methods. The way in which you choose to cleanse your crystal is determined by the item you are cleansing, as well as your preferred method- none are inherently better than others, however you will find that some people prefer different methods.
Some common cleansing methods that can be used are:
Cleansing under running water, such as a stream, waterfall or falling rain.
Placing the quartz in salt water, or ocean water.
Burying the crystal in the ground for a short period to rid the stone of negative energy (make sure to remember where you placed your stone)
Placing the crystal on top of another quartz cluster, or in the centre of quartz generators
Smoke cleansing with incense or smudge herbs

If your Clear Quartz is a single piece, not attached to a rock base, and not in the form of jewellery (i.e. if it is a single point/tumble stone etc) any of these methods is fine. On the other hand, if your quartz is attached to a rock base, you might want to steer away from placing it in water for too long. Also, if the quartz that you want to cleanse is a form of jewellery, take into consideration how it is made (i.e. do not go putting elastic string bracelets such as these, or any jewellery containing metal into water. The same goes for crystal pendulums. If you do choose to place metal objects in running water, it might be worth drying them thoroughly with a hair dryer so that they do not have a chance to rust (but I would never suggest placing them in water)
Once cleansed, you may wish to charge your clear quartz crystal by placing it in the sunlight, or moonlight. How long is up to you, but generally they do not need to charge for more than a few days. To increase the energy, some people even like to place the crystal in the centre of a charging pyramid, such as this copper pyramid. Yet again, listen to your intuition, and take into consideration the crystal you are charging- where did it come from, do you believe it resonates with the sun's energy or the moon's energy? What will you be using it for? Would you like it to have a strong, masculine, sun-type energy or a more subdued, feminine energy? (speaking energetically, not sexually). There is no right or wrong, just your own preferences and experience.
