New Year Tarot Spread

Rebecca Haynes

With the new year fast approaching, it's the perfect time to reflect on the previous year and make plans for the up and coming year to be bigger and better than the last (or at least to learn from our mistakes of the past year).

While most people use the new year to focus on the physical body, why not use it to tap into the guidance of your tarot cards and perform a New Year Tarot Spread instead?

This quick and easy New Year Tarot Spread has been designed to reflect on the past year and to gain insights into the year to come.

Whilst this tarot spread can actually be used at any time of the year, heading into the new year is a great time to perform it. So why not grab your favourite tarot cards and start looking forward to the New Year with a positive mindset!

How the New Year Tarot spread works

This tarot spread consists of only 4 cards. The first card represents the past (i.e. last year); the second card represents the possibilities for the coming year; the third card indicates what you need to focus on in the coming year to bring these possibilities to fruition & the fourth card is indicative of the outcome if you follow the guidance of the other 3 cards and learn from them.

How to Perform the New Year Tarot Spread

  1. Create your sacred space- choose an area that is quiet and free from distractions. If you have a designated space, great, if not, just find somewhere you feel at peace and can concentrate.
  2. Cleanse yourself and your workspace/ cards etc. This can involve physical cleansing such as smoke cleansing, washing etc (don’t wash the cards however 😉) It could also be spiritual cleansing such as performing a meditation and putting a white light around yourself, your space, and your cards. The idea is to purify yourself and your cards so that they are working from a clean slate.
  3. Shuffle your tarot cards (I personally use the Rider Waite Smith deck, but you can use whichever deck resonates with you best). Whilst shuffling your cards, keep the questions above in your mind.
  4. Select 4 cards and lay them out in the pattern below.

The cards are meant to be read from card #1- #4 sequentially.

Take your time analysing the cards and reflecting upon what they mean to you. Something I like to do is write each tarot spread in a tarot journal/ notebook. Recording your tarot journey allows you to see your progress and you can look back at the end of next year and analyse how accurate your reading was.

Have fun with this tarot spread. Let us know what you think. Have you tried this spread? Do you have a favourite New Year spread? We would love to hear your thoughts!
