What Is A Smudge Spray?
Smoke cleansing and smudging has long been seen as a great way to rid oneself and one's environment of negative influences/energies. These practices usually
involve the use of plant material being lit and the smoke wafted through an individuals aura (energy body surrounding an individual) or around a particular environment.
These days, however, it can be difficult to practice some of these techniques, either due to our living and working arrangements, health complications etc. This is where Smudge Sprays come into the picture.
Smudge sprays have become a popular way for individuals to cleanse their own energy and the energy within their environments, instead of using smoke cleansing or traditional smudging. They are portable, can be used basically anywhere and are tolerated well by most people/environments.
What are the Ingredients In Smudge Spray?
Smudge sprays usually consist of water, sometimes labelled as aqua, and an assortment of other soluble ingredients such as essential oils and occasionally an emulsifier to bind the ingredients together. They can also contain other items such as crystals which are added according to the purpose of the spray (i.e. for cleansing or protection).
Why Should You Use a Smudge Spray?
Smudge sprays are a valuable cleansing tool and are used when smoke cleansing and smudging are not appropriate.
Times when you should use a Smudge Spray instead of smoke cleansing/ smudging include:
- If you live in an apartment/ building where you are unable to light incense/ use a smudge stick.
- If you are in a business/professional setting and you wish to cleanse the room between clients.
- If you have or live with someone who has a respiratory condition that means they cannot be around smoke- such as COPD/ Emphysema or Asthma.
- If you wish to cleanse your car/ person on the go.
- If you are unsure of what ingredients to use for a particular result- many sprays are made for specific purposes such as cleansing or protection.
How To Use A Smudge Spray
A smudge spray is used just like any other type of smudging/ smoke cleansing. Simply mist the spray over the area/object you wish to cleanse. When cleansing a room, make sure that you spray the corners of the room- remember they are not just nice smelling air fresheners!
Who Should Not Use Smudge Sprays
As we have stated previously, Smudge Sprays are beneficial for most people and/or situations. There are, however, some instances where they are not appropriate including:
- If they contain ingredients that you are sensitive and/or allergic to
- If you have pets that are sensitive to a particular ingredient
At the end of the day, the ingredients/tools you keep in your spiritual toolbox need to be ones that you not only believe in, but that are beneficial to your practice, health & home. Whether you choose to go the traditional route and use smoke cleansing, or you prefer the purpose designed smudge and room sprays, the end result should always be one that is beneficial to you.
